Jim Godwin

Consulting Actuary

James Godwin, ASA joined CRG in 2004 as a Consulting Actuary. Jim has over 25 years of experience in actuarial and employee benefits consulting including defined benefit, deferred compensation, executive benefit, retiree welfare, and SERP plans. Jim has worked for several large consulting firms, including 20+ years with George Beram & Company, Inc and KPMG. Jim has consulted on plans ranging from 100 to 20,000 participants. Jim has specialized in pension plan design, QDRO calculations and non-discrimination testing in the past.

Client projects have included:
  • Prepare cost studies and projections for benefit improvements, spin-offs, and terminations
  • Supervision of performance of actuarial valuations, pension plan and other post-retirement benefit design, analysis of benefit improvements, FAS/IAS, GASB regulatory compliance for private and public sector retirement plans
  • Draft and review plan documents, amendments, participant notices and Qualified Domestic Relations Orders

Charlie Cahill

Consulting Actuary

Charlie joined CRG in 2010. He has extensive experience with all aspects of post-employment benefit plans. He has consulted on qualified and non qualified plans, defined benefit and defined contribution plans. He has consulted on both corporate and public entities post-retirement medical benefit programs. Prior to joining CRG, Charlie spent 17 years with Aon Consulting, most recently acting as Senior Vice President and Retirement Practice Leader for the Boston office.

John Lowell

Consulting Actuary

John Lowell joined CRG in 2011 with more than 25 years of experience specializing in both nonqualified and qualified retirement plans and executive benefits. He has worked with companies ranging in size from fewer than 10 employees to more than 500,000 employees on the design, funding, compliance and administrative issues surrounding these programs.

Over the last 25 years, John has been a Vice President with Aon Hewitt, a Vice President with JPMorgan, a Consultant with CCA Strategies, a Principal with Towers Perrin, and a Consultant with Hewitt Associates. In that tenure, he has been on the technical leadership team with four of those firms and led the executive benefits practice with two of those firms. Since 2004, he has been on the Joint Program Committee for the Enrolled Actuaries Meeting which he chaired in 2009-2010. He is also on the Board of Directors of the Conference of Consulting Actuaries.

John did undergraduate work in Mathematics at Rutgers University and Massachusetts Institute of Technology and graduate work in Mathematics at Rutgers University where he also served on the math faculty.

Steve Gould

Consulting Actuary

Steve joined CRG in 2011 as a consulting actuary, supporting our efforts in pension finance and enterprise risk management. Steve brings his vast experience after a 30-year career at Towers Watson as a global consulting actuary. Within the Global Consulting Group, he was the lead expert on pension risk management and advised multinational companies and plan trustees in numerous countries including the U.S., Canada, U.K., Netherlands and Switzerland. In prior roles he worked with many colleges and universities assisting in the design and implementation of their defined benefit and 403(b) retirement programs. Steve is a graduate of the Massachusetts Institute of Technology.

David Kershner

Consulting Actuary

David joined CRG in 2012 as a consulting actuary. He has over 27 years of actuarial consulting experience, focusing on qualified and non-qualified defined benefit pension plans and retiree welfare plans. Helping large and medium-sized companies strategically manage the risks associated with their retirement plans, client projects have included:

  • Multi-scenario forecasting of funding and expense levels
  • Pension and retiree welfare plan valuations
  • Plan design studies
  • Merger & acquisition analysis
  • Union negotiation assistance
Prior to joining CRG, David was a Senior Consulting Actuary with Towers Watson. He has also been a Partner and Consulting Actuary with Ernst & Young, and an Associate Actuary with Milliman and Mercer. David is a graduate of York University in Toronto, Canada.

Tom Obara

Retirement Executive

Tom Obara joined CRG in 2009. Tom leads the business development efforts and oversees the defined contribution practice. Tom comes to CRG after 13-years with T. Rowe Price Retirement Plan Services. He joined T. Rowe Price in 1995 as an Operations Representative then served the firm as a Client Relations Consultant, before joining the Sales Department in 1999. He earned a B.A. in Business Management from Washington College in Chestertown, Maryland and an M.B.A. in Management from Loyola College in Baltimore, Maryland. Tom is a Series 7 and 63 NASD Registered Representative and has successfully passed the American Society of Pension Actuaries (ASPA) Pension Administration Exam.

Laura Alspaugh

Investment Consultant

Laura’s experience in financial services spans two decades. Before joining CRG, Laura served as the Chief Investment Officer at an investment technology startup, LTSave. Prior to LTSave, Laura spent 10-years as a senior consultant for Mercer Investment Consulting and advised plan sponsors (defined benefit and defined contribution plans) on investment policy, asset allocation, portfolio structure, and manager research/evaluation. She graduated from Wellesley College and received her M.B.A. from Boston University. She is a Chartered Financial Analyst (CFA) charterholder.

Dan Atkinson

Consulting Actuary

Prior to joining CRG in 2010, Dan was a consultant at Fidelity Investments and, more recently, with Mercer. In his 13 years of consulting prior to joining CRG, Dan gained significant experience with corporate U.S. retirement plans of all sizes, including defined benefit, defined contribution, and post-retirement medical plans. He earned a B.S. in Actuarial Mathematics from Worcester Polytechnic Institute. Dan’s professional designations include Fellow of the Society of Actuaries (FSA), Enrolled Actuary (EA), and Member of the American Academy of Actuaries (MAAA).

Sean McSweeney

Consultant

Sean provides overall client management to CRG’s clients for retirement plan projects. He joined CRG in 2007. Sean has 11 years of experience in the field working for Diversified Investment Advisors and Towers Perrin.

Client projects have included:
  • Annual valuations for determining contribution amounts under ERISA, and accounting valuations and disclosure under FAS87, FAS106, FAS132, FAS158, and IAS19
  • Pension plan studies such as plan design, early retirement windows, and union negotiations
  • Benefit calculation certification and employee benefit statements
  • Plan administration tasks such as government filings
  • IBNR calculations
  • Nondiscrimination testing
  • Plan terminations

Fu Sang Poon

Consulting Actuary

Fu Sang Poon graduated from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology with a BS in Chemistry and a minor in Economics. He has 15 years of experience working on defined benefit plan valuations (ERISA and FAS 87/88) and plan design/forecasting, retiree medical valuations (FAS 106) and plan design/forecasting, defined contribution plan design/forecasting and mergers/spinoffs/acquisitions.

Fu has been with Mercer, Ernst & Young, Buck Consultants and most recently, Fidelity Investments where he was a Vice President in the Actuarial Consulting practice.

Maureen joined CRG in 2007 after graduating from Providence College where she earned a BA in Mathematics with a concentration in Business Studies. Maureen manages CRG's investment performance reporting, assists with benefit administration, prepares benefit statements, and provides overall support of our clients' needs.
